When Comparison Starts Leading Your Business

Jul 09, 2026

One of the hardest parts of owning a business today has nothing to do with finances, hiring, or marketing. It’s learning how to stay focused on your own path when you’re constantly seeing everyone else’s.

A few minutes on social media can be enough to make you question your entire business. You see another salon announcing a second location. Someone launches a membership program. Another owner shares a record-breaking month or unveils a beautiful renovation.

Before you know it, you’re wondering if you’re behind.

“Maybe we should be doing that too.”

I’ve had those thoughts myself.

The challenge isn’t that we’re inspired by what other people are building. Inspiration is a good thing. Seeing new ideas pushes us to grow and reminds us that there are always new possibilities.

The problem is when inspiration quietly turns into comparison.

Not Every Good Idea Is Your Next Step

One thing I’ve learned is that a great idea isn’t always the right idea. Just because something works well for another salon doesn’t automatically mean it’s the next move for yours.

Every business is in a different season. Some are working to build a stronger culture. Others are focused on becoming more profitable. Some need more guests through the door, while others already have full books but need better systems to support their growth.

Those are very different businesses, even if they all look successful from the outside. That’s why it’s so important to filter new ideas through your own vision instead of someone else’s results.

The Question I Try to Ask Myself

Whenever I find myself thinking, “We should do that,” I’ve learned to stop and ask another question first.

Why?

Why does this feel important?

Is it because it genuinely supports where we’re trying to go?

Or is it because someone else is doing it really well?

Sometimes the answer confirms that it’s a great next step.

Other times, I realize I was simply reacting to what I was seeing instead of staying grounded in what I know my business actually needs.

That simple pause has saved me from chasing more than a few shiny objects.

Growth Doesn’t Always Look Exciting

Social media naturally highlights big moments.

New locations.

New branding.

Big revenue milestones.

Those things are exciting, and they deserve to be celebrated.

What we don’t often see are the quieter seasons of business. The months spent improving systems. The conversations that strengthen culture. The pricing adjustments that create healthier margins. The behind-the-scenes work that isn’t flashy but ultimately creates a stronger business.

Some of the best decisions you’ll ever make probably won’t make it to Instagram but they’ll make your business healthier.

Build the Business That’s Right for You

I’ve come to believe that one of the greatest advantages a business owner can have is clarity.

When you’re clear on your vision, your values, and the kind of business you’re trying to build, it becomes much easier to know which opportunities are worth pursuing and which ones simply aren’t for you.

That doesn’t mean you’ll never change direction.

It just means your decisions will be driven by intention instead of comparison.

A Reflection for This Week

The next time you come across an idea that inspires you, resist the urge to immediately ask, “How can we do that?”

Instead, pause for a moment and ask yourself:

Does this fit the business we’re building?

Does it align with our vision?

Is this the right next step—or simply an exciting one?

There will always be businesses doing things differently than you....And that’s okay.

The goal was never to build the business that looks the most impressive online. It’s to build one that reflects your vision, serves your clients well, and gives you a business you’re genuinely proud to own.
