Before You Add More, Ask What Matters

Oct 01, 2026

There’s something about this time of year that makes everything feel a little more urgent.

The calendar starts filling up. The holidays are around the corner. Your team is thinking about their goals, clients are booking ahead, and you’re looking at the last few months of the year wondering what still needs to happen before December 31.

For a lot of salon owners, the natural response is to add more.

More goals. More promotions. More meetings. More expectations for the team. More things you want to fix before the year is over.

But before you add another thing to the list, it might be worth asking a different question:

What actually matters most right now?

More Activity Doesn’t Always Mean More Progress

When we feel behind, adding something can make us feel productive. A new initiative gives us something tangible to work on. A new goal gives the team something to chase. A new system feels like it might finally solve the problem.

But if everything becomes important, nothing really is.

Your team can only focus on so many things at once, and so can you. When there are ten priorities competing for attention, people naturally start choosing what feels most urgent in the moment. That’s when you end up with a team that is incredibly busy but not necessarily moving in the same direction.

As the leader, one of the most valuable things you can give your team is clarity around what matters now.

Not forever. Not everything you want to accomplish over the next year.

Right now.

Your Team Should Know What Winning Looks Like

Think about your team today. If you asked each person, “What are the most important things we’re focused on as a salon right now?” would you get similar answers?

That question can tell you a lot.

Sometimes we assume our team knows the priorities because we’ve mentioned them before. We talked about retail in a meeting. We told everyone we want to improve the guest experience. We’ve reminded them about rebooking. We’ve talked about hitting goals.

But mentioning something and creating clarity around it are two very different things.

If something truly matters, your team should know what it is, why it matters, and what their role is in making it happen.

That doesn’t require another hour-long meeting or a complicated tracking system. Sometimes it simply requires the leader to say, “For the next 30 days, this is where we’re focusing our attention, and here’s what that looks like for each of us.”

Some Things May Need to Wait

This can be one of the hardest parts of leadership, especially if you’re someone who sees possibility everywhere. You can have ten great ideas and still only have the capacity to execute two of them well.

Choosing what matters also means being willing to decide what can wait. That doesn’t mean the other ideas are bad. It doesn’t mean you’re giving up on them. It means you’re protecting the things you’ve decided are most important from getting buried underneath everything else.

There will always be another opportunity, another project, another thing you could improve. The goal isn’t to do all of it at once. The goal is to know what deserves your attention in this season.

Finish the Year With Intention

There are still three months left in the year.

That’s plenty of time to create meaningful movement in your business, but probably not enough time to overhaul everything. So instead of starting Q4 by making a massive list of everything you wish looked different, narrow it down.

What would make the biggest difference in your business between now and the end of the year?

What does your team need from you to make that happen?

What are you willing to say “not yet” to so you can actually follow through?

You don’t need twelve priorities for the next twelve weeks.

You need clarity around the few things that matter most and the discipline to keep bringing your team back to them.

Because finishing the year strong isn’t about how much you can squeeze into the calendar.

It’s about being intentional with what you choose to do with the time that’s left.
